My Wish for Gymnasts in 2024
My hope for all gymnasts in 2024 is that they learn to detach their sense of self-worth from their gymnastic performances. Many of the gymnasts I work with tend to harbor negative feelings about themselves when a competition doesn't go well. They perceive a decline in their self-esteem following a subpar performance. My aspiration is for every gymnast to recognize their intrinsic value as a person, irrespective of their success or failure in competition. While it's natural to feel disappointed after a poor performance, it's crucial to understand that such outcomes don't define one's character. Here are some suggestions for cultivating unconditional self-acceptance:
Acknowledge that you are a valuable person, even in the face of challenging competition.
Separate gymnastics from your personal life. Once you exit the gym or competition arena, assume your roles in other aspects of life - sister, daughter, friend, etc.
Reinforce the idea that you are more than just a gymnast. Gymnastics is an activity you engage in, not your entire identity. Take time to explore other interests and talents beyond the realm of gymnastics.
Parents, you can contribute to your gymnast's well-being by encouraging discussions about interests outside of gymnastics. Save gymnastics-related conversations for specific instances when your gymnast initiates them. Unconditionally love your gymnast, regardless of their performance, and maintain consistent support whether they experience success or setbacks in meets.
