How to Best Support Your Gymnast This Meet Season - December 2023
Your role as a parent is crucial, not only in supporting your gymnast's athletic endeavors but also in nurturing their overall well-being and self-esteem. Creating a positive and understanding environment will significantly contribute to your gymnast's enjoyment and success in gymnastics. This is especially important after a meet. As someone who works with hundreds of gymnasts, I often hear that they worry about disappointing their parents. Here are some tips on how to best support your gymnast during the competition season!
Tip #1: Foster open communication: After a meet, provide a safe space where they can express their emotions or discuss how the meet went.
Tip #2: Active listening without judgment: If they want to talk about the meet, listen actively and avoid judgment. Take this time to highlight achievements within their control, such as dedication and effort, rather than focusing on scores or placement.
Tip #3: Addressing setbacks positively: If they discuss setbacks, use it as an opportunity to emphasize that setbacks are a natural part of life and a chance for growth. Recognize and emphasize effort over the outcome, and normalize emotions if they are upset.
Tip #4: Respect their choice to talk or not: It's okay if your gymnast doesn't want to discuss the competition. As parents, respect their choice.
Tip #5: Unconditional love: Emphasize that you love your gymnast unconditionally, regardless of their performance.
Need more ideas? Here are some great statements or questions to ask your gymnast after the meet:
"I loved watching you today!"
"Did you have fun?"
"Do you want to talk about the meet?"
"What was a challenge you overcame?"
"Where would you like to go eat?"
"What would you like to do after the meet?"
Your support is invaluable in fostering a positive and empowering environment for your gymnast. Thank you for being an essential part of their journey.
