Bouncing Back From A Bad Warm-Up - February 2024

Imagine this scenario: You're in beam warm-up, and you fall on your series. You try again, but you fall once more. How would that impact your nerves and confidence as you approach your routine?

Many gymnasts struggle with confidence after a poor warm-up at a competition. When mistakes happen during warm-up, doubts can creep in, leading to fear of repeating those errors during the actual routine. It's crucial not to let a warm-up mistake diminish your confidence. Here are some tips to help you maintain confidence in your gymnastics, even after a challenging warm-up:

  1. Remember that warm-ups serve a purpose—it's a preparation phase. Use it to get comfortable with the equipment and warm up your body.

  2. Reflect on times when a less-than-perfect warm-up didn't affect your performance. Recall moments when you excelled despite a rough warm-up or when a flawless warm-up didn't guarantee success. Your warm-up doesn't determine your competition outcome.

  3. Additionally, consider how you can turn warm-up setbacks into an advantage. If you face challenges, remind yourself that you've already overcome them. Alternatively, if you had a great warm-up, use it as a confidence booster. Always redirect your focus to your WINs – What's Important Now!
