Resiliency - May 2022

As the gymnastics season comes to an end, make sure to also continue to work on your gymnasts’ mindset. Help your gymnast build resiliency this off season!

Gymnasts face a wide range of physiological, emotional, and physical stressors. All these stressors can impact their performance and love for the sport. Many of the gymnasts I work with, and as a gymnast myself, we face stressors such as injuries, coaching changes, performance slumps and mental blocks.

Resiliency as an athlete is an important skill to help a gymnast get through these tough times. Resilience is defined as the role or mental processes and behaviors that promote personal assets and protect an individual from the potential negative effects of stressors.

Many people think of resiliency as a trait, but did you know it is a set of skills that can be developed, trained, and practiced?  Resiliency is made up of a mindset and specific coping strategies to help navigate through challenges. So how do we help our gymnasts develop their resiliency? Here are some tips!

  1. Help your gymnast develop a growth mindset; if you missed this newsletter on growth mindset, check it out on my website under February’s newsletter.

    2. Learn to accept that setbacks are part of life and will happen. Having your gymnast identify how they will cope with a setback will reduce anxiety and help build their confidence

    3. Evaluate all setbacks constructively instead of critically. Instead of viewing setbacks as failures, view them as a learning opportunity.

    4. Focus only on the things you can control.

    5. Finding the good - make sure to practice gratitude.

    6. Ask yourself if your actions and thoughts are being helpful or hurtful.
