Navigating Doubt and Anxiety - Mindful Gymnast Update - September 2023
I've noticed that many gymnasts are grappling with doubts as the competition season draws near. It's essential to remember that feelings of doubt and anxiety are entirely normal in the world of gymnastics.
Often, we tend to respond to these emotions by either brushing them aside or attempting to adopt a relentlessly positive attitude. However, I've been encouraging the gymnasts I work with to confront their doubts and anxieties head-on. Instead of merely trying to think positively and ignoring these emotions, we should consider that they might be signaling something important.
Why, you ask? Anxiety often acts as a warning sign of potential risks we shouldn't disregard. However, it's all too easy to become consumed by anxiety, which can distract us from the present moment and divert our focus from our goals.
So, how can we effectively deal with doubt and anxiety? When you find yourself in the hold of these emotions, take a moment to acknowledge the specific concerns they're highlighting. If those concerns are valid, take actionable steps to address them and prevent any feared outcomes. However, in cases where the feared outcomes are unlikely, it's crucial to redirect your focus back to the present moment. One helpful acronym I like to use for this is WIN, which stands for "What's Important Now."
I also have two exciting opportunities to share with all our gymnasts, parents, and coaches:
