Goal Setting - June 2023
Goal Setting!
Goal setting has long been acknowledged to enhance performance and should be a staple in mental training!
Why is goal setting so important? Goals can influence performance by directing gymnasts’ attention to the relevant task, as well as increasing persistence in the face of challenges! However, for goals to be effective, gymnasts need to make sure they are making the right type of goals! Goals should be framed using the SMART framework, as well as making outcome and process goals.
What are SMART Goals? Goals that are…
S. Specific – what exactly do you want to achieve? Be clear and defined.
M. Measurable – Can you measure your goal?
A. Attainable/adjustable
R. Realistic – make sure the goal is not too easy or too hard.
T. Time sensitive – when do you want the goal to be achieved?
Example of a SMART Goal – I will get my BHS, BHS on high beam by the end of summer training.
Another thing to consider when making goals is we want to make sure we make process and outcome goals. The outcome goal is what you want to achieve at the finish line, while the process goal is how you will get there. For example, getting your BHS, BHS on high beam is an outcome goal. A process goal would be doing 10 series a day (maybe it is starting on low beam), visualizing your series 5x per day, and using your mental cues when doing your series. The result of the process goal should lead to the outcome.
I recommend making an outcome goal and process goal for each event. After the goals are made, make sure you monitor the goal and adjust as necessary! Checking in on your goals should be completed often. If adjustments need to be made, then make them! Remember goals need to be flexible!
